GLOSSARY

MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition technology): MICR is an automated machine system for recognizing and sorting bank checks, using magnetic ink, magnetic heads and specific numbers and symbols. The numbers and symbols are in specific location along the bottom of checks and documents.

E13-B (E13B): E13-B Is a font used in MICR bank check processing. The font is specified in ANSI Standard X9.27 and is used in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, etc. The E13-B font is shown below:

MAGNETIC CARD STANDARD (ISO 7811): Magnetic Card Standard is a set of standards describing the physical, magnetic, and electrical characteristics for magnetic cards. Note: Some cards use proprietary standards and therefore do not comply with ISO.

MAGNET: A magnet is a material that has the property, either natural or induced, of attracting ferromagnetic materials.

MAGNETIC FIELD: Magnetic field is the space around a magnet in which a magnetic force can be detected.

MAGNETIC FLUX: Magnetic flux is a measure of magnetism. The total magnetic induction across or through a specified area (Symbol: Φ).

OERSTED (Oe): Oersted (Oe) is the unit used to measure magnetic field intensity in the cgs system (centimeter-gram-second) (Symbol: H).

GAUSS (G): Gauss (G) is the unit used to measure magnetic flux density (Symbol: B).

PERMEABILITY: Permeability is the ability of a material to conduct flux (Symbol: µ).
